Job summary

Within the scope of the PLASMAR Project (MAC/1.1a/030), OOM-ARDITI is looking for Marine Biologist (graduate level or equivalent) with expertise in scientific scuba diving and underwater sampling.

Job description:

The PLASMAR Project (MAC/1.1a/030), financed under the Interreg MAC 2014-2020 Programme, aims to support the development of methodologies for Maritime Spatial Planning and facilitate implementation of the MSPD 2014/89/EU. The project intends to apply robust scientific methodology for development of the maritime activities balanced with the marine environment. In this context, PLASMAR purposes include the development and implementation of standard environmental impact assessment standards for each of the studied maritime sector (aquaculture, blue energy, maritime transport, etc).

Within the scope of the project, OOM-ARDITI is looking for Marine Biologist (graduate level or equivalent) with expertise in scientific scuba diving and underwater sampling. Knowledge on macrobentic communities is expected.

The candidate is expected to develop and optimize tools for marine environmental monitoring. Benthic, visual and chemical surveys will contribute as well to evaluate environmental descriptors for the aquaculture industry. Surveys are expected to assess biological and physico-chemical impact of existing operations on the seabed or the potential for the location of new farm sites.

Chosen indicators should be statistically robust and have a quantitative threshold level or a range of values; should be cost-efficient and of good repeatability and confidence.

The successful candidate will join the aquaculture research group, an interdisciplinary team with the following research topics: aquaculture species diversification, multitrophic integrated aquaculture, environmental impact of aquaculture; marine spatial planning.

Responsibilities include:
  • Frequent scuba diving;
  • Underwater Sampling
  • Selection of environmental parameters impacting on marine environment
  • Setting up of experimental design;
  • Data analysis and reporting.
Admission Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a Degree in Marine Biology (or other related field), with experience in the following areas:
  • Scuba diving
  • Species collection methods
  • Data collection and handling databases
  • Proficiency in Portuguese and Spanish languages for communication with stakeholders and partners (required).
  • Fluent in English for reports and scientific outputs
  • Prior work on databases is preferred.
Workplan
  • Perform literature research related with specific topics;
  • Selection of descriptors and indicators for environmental monitoring;
  • Experimental design;
  • Species identification;
  • Data management;
  • Report elaboration;
  • Participate on the writing of scientific papers.
Scientific guidance and workplace

The work will be coordinated by Carlos Andrade (PhD) and Natacha Nogueira (Msc.) at the Mariculture Centre of Calheta – Madeira Fisheries Directorate, in Madeira Island (Portugal).

Salary

745.00 €/month tax free - ARDITI research fellowship (BI - Licenciado) monthly maintenance stipend and regulations are determined by ‘FCT-Fundação para a Ciência Tecnologia’ (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en).

Evaluation criteria

The following evaluation criteria will be applied:
FS = QA + EP
FS – Final Score
QA – Qualifications
EP – Experience

QA:
5 points – Degree in Marine Biology (or related field of study)
EP:
5 points- Experience in scuba diving
