Through the already existing MARCET Network (MAC/ 1.1b/149), the consequent harmonization of protocols aimed at the conservation of Macaronesian cetacean populations, and the analysis carried out on the current situation of the tourist sector associated with these species; this new initiative was born (MARCET II Project) with the objective of generating management tools at local and regional level for the protection of groups of cetaceans that live in protected marine areas and of special interest for the activity, the conservation of the good environmental status of these areas and the development of ecological and environmental sustainability criteria applicable to the whale watching ecotourism activity, thus implying its strengthening and value as a model of sustainable economic development in the region.
